In the cloister of St. Catherine's church is a statue of St. Jerome. During the 4th century A.D. in a cave adjacent to the birthplace of Jesus, he translated the Bible from Hebrew into Latin. Jerome's translation, know as the Vulgate, became the official Bible of the Catholic Church.

In the grotto under the central altar of the Church of the Nativity is a silver commemorating the birth of Christ. The star links the traditon of the Magi to Bethelehem. "We have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him ... And lo, the star went before them, till it came over the place where the Child was." (Matthew 2:1-13).
